| Ulua fishermen devote long hours diving for tako and spend massive amounts of money to get the freshest tako available. If you buy the tako, expect to pay $3-6 a pound for "fresh" tako. Ulua fishermen usually want the Tako to be so fresh, that they are still changing color when they use them for bait. |
are going to a place that tako wont last. Rugged, strong, and smelly, this bait is one of the best! A lot of the bigger Ulua are caught using EEL. Puhi-paka ("fierce eel" in hawaiian) with it's brown body and white spots on it tend to be the top deep water bait for Ulua. |
another one of the favorite eel's used by fishermen. Mostly used in shallow water, this is one of the best meat you will find for bait. The only reason people tend to not use it in deep water is because the meat is so fragile, and is easily taken from the hook by small fish or other eels. |

papio/ulua... This is the prize bait that fishermen devote numerous hours trying to catch. Sometimes called the "Magic bait" because you throw out a small oama and it turns into a big papio or ulua when you reel it up! |
