Ulua Fishing Equipment 101

If you want to go Ulua fishing, you are going to need a lot of expensive equipment.  The first thing that you have to decide is what terrain you want to go fishing in (sandy or rocky area's).  This is the things that you need to fish in sandy shallow area's:
Bait Casting (shallow water)

This is a minimum check list of what you will need to bait cast.  Keep in mind that most bait casters go to sandy area's.

  • Fishing Poles (fenwicks are my favorite!)
  • Fishing reel's
  • Monofilament line
  • Swivel's
  • Heavy monofilament or wire leader
  • Hook's
  • Lead sinker's
  • Sand spikes
  • Bell's
  • Knife
  • Wire cutters
  • Bait (your preference)
  • Big plastic bag or Cooler for the fish

If your going to fish overnight, you should bring the following:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Tent
  • Lantern
  • Extra mantle for the lantern
  • Flashlight (Headlamp preferred)
  • Food and water
If you plan to go fishing in rocky deep water, you can either slide bait or baitcast.  If you bait cast, all you need is the fishing equipment under the shallow water section.  If you go slide baiting, you are going to need the following:
Slide Bait (deep water)
  • 60-100lb test main line in you Reel's
  • Reels (4/6.0's or Newells)
  • Really stiff (at least 20 tip) Ulua poles
  • 200-300lb test monofilament or wire leader (6-10ft)  at least 4
  • Slide stop ring's
  • Squid line 45-72lb test (leader for your sinker)
  • Wire sinker's 8-12oz
  • Dental floss (waxed) if you reel your leader line in your pole
  • Slide buckles
  • Hooks (size 50 or bigger/16.0-20.0)
  • Tie down line (to tie down your pole so you don't loose it when the waves come)
  • Bell's
  • Slide gaff, barrel gaff, or long pole gaff
  • Extra rope for safety
  • Floatation device for safety
  • Bring some glow sticks just for emergency too
  • Cell phone...  remember reading about some rescues that were successful all because of a cell phone lately?
  • Headlamp (with halogen light bulb)
  • Extra halogen bulbs (this is a must!)
  • Extra  battery just in case of emergency
  • Rock spikes if the place you are going doesn't have holes to put your pole
  • Whole fresh tako (octopus), eel, or live bait
  • Food and water

This is a list of the minimum amount of equipment required to fish.  You will need more stuff depending on where you are going, what type of fishing you are going to do, and your own preferences on stuff.
