It was more that it spoiled cargo bringing 'bad luck' to people that depending on cargo and food stores for livelihood.

Most superstitions have some sort of meaning behind it like the one started by Big Island park rangers in regards to 'bad luck to take a rock' to stop tourists from pilfering.. Then any bad luck is attributed to such rock and volla no more rock taking. As most people know the earth is more alive then not spiritual and otherwise and respect goes a long way in keeping a natural balance. Those that hate nature work night and day to pave over and destroy that harmony and stewardship of man all while blaming the little guy for what the corporate body does.

Think about this the whole of the Hawaiian Islands were covered in dense sandalwood forests and the cheep workers houses all had beautiful hardwood floors... But no one bothered to plant any more as they took and took and took and then in the 1930's some poor min wage worker cut down the very last tree for the town sawmill to make a buck. Same with fishing a few guys net all the fish and kill off all the bait fish while blaming the guy standing on shore with a single line in the water wishing for a fish that most likely will never come because all the bait has been killed off. Even as late as the 1950's Hawaii Kai bay was filled to the brim with sardines much like South Africa bringing in the Large predators within casting range of shore..... Thus the superstition of shore fishing for fun when the reality was more like catching fresh Ahi for dinner.
