Hold the bus, lets get the facts straight before it spreads like .....well, you get the idea. DLNR is proposing some rule changes to gill netting, along with some area closures which will prohibit any gill netting. There are hearings scheduled for this coming week on all islands:

6 p.m.., Tuesday, July 18, 2006:

-Hilo High School Cafeteria, 556 Wai?anuenue Avenue, Hilo, Hawai?i
-Lihikai School Cafeteria, 335 S. Papa Avenue, Kahului, Maui
-Benjamin Parker Elementary School Cafeteria, 45-259 Waikalua Road, Kane?ohe, O?ahu
-Kalani High School Cafeteria, 4680 Kalanianaole Hwy., Honolulu, O?ahu
-Leihoku Elementary School Cafeteria, 86-285 Leihoku Street, Wai?anae, O?ahu

6 p.m.., Wednesday, July 19, 2006:

-Kulana ?Oiwi, Kaunakakai, Moloka?i

6 p.m.. Thursday, July 20, 2006:

-Big Game Fishing Club, Kealakehe Parkway, Kailua-Kona, Hawai?i
-Wilcox Elementary School Cafeteria, 4319 Hardy Street, Lihu?e, Kaua?i
-Lana?i Public and School Library, Lana?i City, Lana?i

Please read up about it here before spreading any rumors:

It's good that they are taking some action but here are some things to think about:

Area closures are proposed for the following areas:

Hawai?i - existing banned areas in West Hawai?i
Maui - around the entire island
- Portlock Point to Keahi Point (west of Pearl Harbor channel)
- Kailua Bay (Mokapu Peninsula to Wailea Point (northern boundary for Bellows AFB)
- Kane?ohe Bay (a portion of the Bay; landward boundaries would be the main ship/sampan channels and landward of ?Ahu o Laka)

If some areas are left open supposedly in consideration for the heavily populated Native Hawaiian communitys, are they saying Maui doesn't have any?

Under \"Key Events\" of Gill Net Ammendments, they note:

1998-99 - Gill Net Task Force meets and recommends lay net regulations
2000-02 - Draft regulations developed from recommendations and reviewed internally

Apparently, they decided to do their own thing because the recommendations were pretty well tossed out the window.

For those of you that have very strong convictions about gill netting, here's your chance to say what's on your mind and it will be public record....unlike all those emails and letters we fire off constantly to Peter Young and the Division that get tossed or conveniently lost.
