Hi Baitballah, can i ask you what weight rod and line you were using, i want to bring a fishing rod over when i come next year and would like some advice to make sure i bring the right one.

Is it possible to catch these fish on lures, great fish mate would certainly make it a trip to remember a catch like that, cheers Wayne

Hi Wayne, my rod is a St. Croix Salmon/Steelhead blank (5SC96MF2G) that fellow forum member konaplugcaster wrapped for me. Build thread> viewtopic.php?f=42&t=13405 . Yes, absolutely you can catch these fish using lures... All my catches are on lures, I don't remember the last fish I caught using bait 8) .

My 4 year old caught and released his first two 'oio. He caught them dunking ika during one of our regular father-son fishing adventures. He was very happy, and now wants to go after his first moi. Already caught a few papio and kaku earlier this year while whipping with his other Daiwa spinning combo and top water lures. He's already eyeing up one of my Sustains... :o

Whippersnapper,
Good catch for your 4 yo with the O'ios.....!!!
Neva mind the Sustains....give 'em your Stella's already. He could be a future "Hall of Famer...!!!"

Ha ha ha deepkona, I love my "little man" dearly, but a man has to draw the line somewhere. I'd give my life...but...Stella? :o Although, he is turning out to be one heck of a sportsman. I may be wrong, but it seems as though his 4 year old hands keep getting a little farther apart each time the fishing adventure is retold (I'm sure he didn't pick that up around home  ). But, you gotta love the innocense of childhood- I gotta remind him this is the only time "lying" is ok- tell a different location from where we actually caught the fish!!!
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

Great catch by the young fella Wippersnapper, hope they are still around in May when i get there.

Ika is squid is that right, don't worry about lying about where you caught the fish, in Australia we call that relocation, it doesn't sound as bad for the young fella, cheers wayne

Whippersnapper,
I got ya on the "Secret Spot..lying"....but in my eyes, it's not lying, just not telling the whole truth.
A few years back, I took my 7 y/o daughter whipping one afternoon for Moi because I had just tied up some Moi looking lures. Wouldn't you know it....we caught a couple. Within the next few weeks, my friends are telling me "Hey, I heard you caught some good sized Moi at ____________!"(can't say, it would be lying). I had to talk to my daughter after that about her fishing future...? Kids...gotta love em...!

Youngy,
YES...squid/cuttlefish is known as Ika in the islands. Great bait for O'io, cut into strips for whipping or larger pieces for dunking/baitcasting.
I have a great feeling that YOU WILL get your big O'io during your Hawaiian Holiday this April/May. You certainly are focused. If I catch one and it already has your name on it, I'll be sure to release it.

One of the first things i am going to do when i get to Waikiki is go feed that big school of Bonefish in the no fishing zone Deepkona, that will give me a lot of inspiration, cheers wayne
