Post by morninchew » Sat May 12, 2007 8:03 am

Slybaita, I like go for some uku! Should I bottomfish or troll? I think outside Moanalua Bay get uku. How deep should I be. 50 ft., 100ft., more? What type of bait for uku? Any advice appreciated.

I think 75ft+ is the best uku grounds. I use opelu, cut them in half if they are large. I use rubberbands or small zipties to make sure the bait doesnt slip off the hook. My rig consist of #13 hook, 2ft of 200lb wire leader with a barrel swivel to connect it to my mainline (30lb). I use a 4oz lead connected with a large rubberband to the swivel eye. If the lead gets stuck on the bottom you just give it a good tug and the rubberband breaks. Drop the rig to the bottom and give it a fews cranks. I use the jigging method, up and down a few times a minute. I like bottom fishing better than trollingh because it is more hands on.

jigging for uku

Slydbaita, That's sounds straightforward enough. :) 200 lb. wire though, I fish Oahu and I don't know if that will draw any strikes. I might go with some mono to start. Thanks for the advice> You ever troll for papio in your 'yak. Das winnas. Peace Morninchew
