I have an Okuma Solaris and there great rods. They have a pretty stiff back bone and can even be used for light sliding. They pair up perfectly with a jigmaster or a penn fathom. I even threw a seagate 50 on it and was able to hit 100+ yards at a park. For less then $130 u can't go wrong, and if decide I want it longer u can extend it with a metal butt cap.

In general...
Longer the pole, the less effort to throw to attain the same distance as a shorter pole.
Shorter pole will come around faster and easier to throw.

With that said...
If you try and muscle a 14-footer versus a 12-footer, the 12-footer is going to come around easier due to it's shorter length.
The 14-footer will fight you more when you're rotating.
This is assuming both rods are of basically the same general diameter - i.e. both are 28mm at the reel seat.

Now, this now comes down to personal preference and how compatible it is with your casting technique...
If you're the type that like muscle the cast and always CHEEE-HOOOOOO when you cast, the shorter pole might be your thing.
If you like finesse the cast and got good consistent casting technique, then the longer pole might be better for you.
