Post by Brian F. » Wed Mar 20, 2013 10:36 am

Passing this along for everyone's info:

Aloha Gang-
Professor Ray Hilborn will be at a public speaking event hosted by the PIFG and HFACT next Wednesday nite, March 27, 2013, at the Pier 38 Harbor View Center from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Professor Hilborn is one of the premier fishery stock assessment and management scientists who professionally and publicly presents another side to the overfishing crisis you often hear put out by organizations critical of fishermen. You can google him to see articles and video of his interviews and presentations. The title of his presentation at the event is: "The end of fish or sustainable fishing: What is the real status of fisheries?"

The event is being coordinated by PIFG and HFACT. Hosts include HVC, POP, United Fishing, Hawaii Longline Association and Hawaii Seafood Council. Pupus will be provided. No-host bar.

Here's video of Prof. Hilborn's presentation shot by Dean Sensui of Hawaii Goes Fishing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzNPFaNb ... e=youtu.be

Begins by giving the history of the "Doom and Gloom" message that everyone has heard.

At 8:30 into the presentation, he talks about why commercial catch data is not a good indicator of the status of fisheries and that the "All the world's fish will be gone by 2048" paper relied on that.

Further in at 14:30, he states that lumping all the world's fisheries together and saying thay are failing is just not true because they are all different and need to be understood differently. Many are actually managed well and by working with Dr Boris Worm, author of "2048", they along with others proved the "2048" projection was wrong and that there will be lots of fish around till then and, in fact, forever, because fisheries are being managed better.

At 24:00 Prof Hilborn explains the environmental cost of of fishing relative to other food sources of the world, 34:30 biodiversity concerns are greater with agriculture, 40:40 the danger of creating large expanses of marine protected areas - the cost/impact will be that seafood will have to be replaced by other contries ripping up all of the world's rainforest to plant crops to feed everyone.
Aloha,
