no special rigs. just baitcast with tako like you would for papio or ulua with #24-30 bkn. a'ama crab and wana works too. i even know of some caught using ika head. they're usually caught on accident. mu are usually found in deeper waters near dropoffs and channels but often come onto shallower reefs. if fishing a deep vertical cliff, you might even be able to drop the lead right off the side.
LUCK is what happens when PREPARATION meets OPPORTUNITY

Like bolo I'a said, catching mu is alway by accident. I caught 3 in one night while targeting oio. I was baitcasting tako legs
into a channel known for producing oio's not mu's :o

I caught my first Mu using a single Ika leg for bait. I was whipping for "pachis" the night before and used the same rig minus the floater, dropped my line straight down and BAM! 5lb. Mu. Caught my 2nd Mu like others said, dunking Tako leg.

Mu's flavorite food is A'ama crabs.. Best to palu with crush a'ama crabs -slow and continuious..

We just use # 15-24 bkn hooks...flourocarbon leaders maybe 20 + lb line or bigger...depending on how we feel....hook a whole or half a'ama crab to the hook and dunk...

Locations listed above is good choices to choose from....

Aloha, ...NO rules or special set-ups... just the basic hook and line methods...

My uncle catches alot of them. He uses a custom made cork float with chopstick in the middle connected to a j style hook. The hook is pretty decent sized. He floats aama crab usually in the mornings or just before dark. He rips the back off of the aama and breaks it in half. He also catches nenue with this setup.

Aloha,

Seems like been a while since this thread was active but hopefully can get response. How big Tako leg using when catch Mu? Curious because I've caught 2 Mu; 1st (5lbs) was accident whipping for menpachi (golf ball AH hook and big chunk of frozen white shrimp with a split shot lead) 2nd was dunking with shrimp on a small mustad bait hook.... Tako would be prime since it will last longer on the hook but idk how big of a piece would work since it seems like would be huge compared to shrimp... Mahalo in advance!!

The tako leg does not need to be a large piece, maybe 1/4 round OK... 4 inches long maybe?

We caught Mu using ika strips ... too big? not good either,

Aloha, ..Mu are very good eating too...
