Since this is the more recent "Hickam" thread, I'll post it in this one. In regards to getting into Hickam, they don't do passes unless you are escorted by active duty or retired military with base access. Your escort must take FULL responsibility over you so he must trust you not to screw him over by breaking the rules.

Speaking of rules, I've recently been told that there are new/updated rules to fishing JBPHH (Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam) as of July 25, 2012. One of the rules for fishing JBPPH is that its a catch and release fishery now. Can someone please substantiate this? If it is true, I don't want guys not knowing and getting in trouble for taking a catch. I don't know the enforcement or punishment, but if its anything like the mainland, they have the RIGHT to kick open (search) your cooler and if caught, its an immediate fine and/or confiscation of gear and court appearance. In instances like these, they'll state "ignorance is not an excuse". How they will determine if it's bait you brought from home, or something caught, I do not know...

Maybe it's to curb the recent slaughtering of sharks and other life left to rot? Maybe to stop the recent lay nets left overnight? I don't know. So I'm asking the fishing community if this is something true, and if you guys know more about this. If it is true, it may be the start of things to come.

I've never heard about this and haven't seen any signs saying so. Fishing enforcement on Hickam is non existent I've only once in almost 10 years of fishing there seen a DLNR officer on base. I haven't been there for a couple months though so maybe there has been a change since then in the regulations but there's always been signs saying dont eat the fish because of pollution.

This is an update to Hickam AFB regulations. The Pearl Harbor Navy has taken over enforcement of Hickam AFB. All civilian guests will be given a 1 day pass, not 3 days. Your sponsor will have to be present while applying for this pass. Your pass will be issued from 0600 to 2400. Navy security will prohibit night fishing in front of secured areas. I dont believe there are any catch and release regulation at this time, although naval regulations could change at any time. Will keep you posted when i get more info.

i was fishing past the flats and the MPs would come into the parking lot time to time. only once they stopped by to check on us probably to see if we were drinking and partying which we werent. so they were totally cool with us fishing they didnt mention anything

i have received an update to Recreational Fishing at PHNDSA. Doc JBPHHINST 5510.2, states 1) Recreational fishing within the PHNDSA and from the Pearl Harbor shore line is allowed only in designated areas as pole and line fishing on a catch and release basis. No spear fishing or use of nets is allowed. This instruction shall not be misconstrued to permit any violation of Federal or State laws or regulations. The provisions herein are applicable to the taking of all forms of marine life, including crustaceans (crabs) from the waters of Pearl Harbor. In 1998, the S/H DOH issued an advisory not to eat any fish or shell fish from Pearl Harbor. The advisory remains if effect as of 2012. Due to this advisory, only pole and line fishing is allowed and only on a catch and release basis. Also, i have heard 3 day passes will be issued only on fridays. Any other day will be just a one day pass. I do not believe catch and release affects the Hickam AFB designated areas. There are about 4 pages of documents that i wish i could share, but if you are interested, please call PHNDSA.

Caught a barracuda fishing at hickam tonight. The fish were very active for about 30 mins. and then it just died. Most action i've had there, ever.

I lurk on here much more than post here, but I am a Navy Chief that works at Pearl and I can tell you the above is not known by many. The Hickam MWR will take Military ID holders out on a boat to catch fish. I've eaten snappers and Lie ? from there no problem. Guys keep fish from the fishing pier every day. I am relatively certain this is done as a precautionary measure in case someone does get sick.

I've been fishing all my life but for some reason the fish on Oahu hate me. The most love I've gotten here is on Hickam.

Went to hickam today and everyone who fishes there will be dissapointed to know that, the commander of JBPH wants that shack and all of the personal gear taken out of there by monday at 0700. It's too bad, I don't feel that shack is hurting anyone by any means, it will be missed, I now have to find another spot to shade my pale skin......
