Lagoon Drive

Post by RubbishFishCatcha » Sat Jan 24, 2009 5:23 pm

Hi guys, I just went to lagoon drive today with my brother and all we caught was seaweed... We tried all the way at the end where there are guardrails and we had no bites so we tried more up by this small cove... still nothing all day... we were dunking and using ika... any advice on what to use, what time to go, and what kind of setups produce over there? I heard people catch papio over there, but after today, i'm pretty discouraged about that spot...

Aku belly will produce white eels, small hammerhead sharks and an occasional papio.
It was a spot where I'd go night time to catch white eels..

Never had too much luck there back in the day (I doubt it got "better").
We used to trek into reef runway almost all the way to the end.
There's some sand peninsulas sticking out out there.
We only end up hooking up to sharks. :(
We heard that you need to go AROUND the end and fish the open ocean side of reef runway to produce.
Our hike was already a couple miles long - too tired!
We've never gotten lucky trying to fish right off Lagoon Drive itself - guess gotta get lucky...

The flats on the ocean side of the runway used to be terrific whipping grounds for white papio and kaku. Toward the Ewa end where the water's deeper, people used to slide bait for ulua.

I've heard that the entire runway has been off limits to fishermen since 9-11. Bummer.

i think i know where you're talking about that reef runway strip... me and my brother saw it and was thinking that was a good place to go, but it was super far and theres no longer a public access for it... :( the sandy flat areas in the middle looked like prime oio grounds though... still kinda reluctant to go after the last time we went and came home empty handed...

We had lots of fun walking all along the inside catching small omilu and occasional white papio on light tackle. Outside people tell me they did well baitcasting for ulua and oio. The end where the jacks are was the slide bait place and that spot was good too and sure it is still today. Too bad the reef out there got scraped "just a little" last week.

Yeah was like 22.5 tons of "Honey" that came out. Not to mention the "estimated 50 gallons of oil the day before."

I miss fishing the reef runway..... we tried to have an overnighter there many, many years ago, we went in at 3pm and by 10pm everyone of us had an Ulua (6 of us 7 Ulua total, one of my buddies had 2) so we decided to call it a night and hauled out.. the biggest of the trip was a forty pounder and I had second to the smallest (under 30 lbs)... was still a good night though.... well that's over with.
