Home Depot Sucks.

Post by Fishbreath » Thu Aug 30, 2012 6:42 pm

I got some ideas off the web on rigging up my recently purchased Trident Prowler 15. I needed some stainless steel nuts and bolts, Multi Purpose Poly Cord, hot glue sticks and PVC tubing in 1 1/4" and 1" sizes. Pretty basic or so I thought. Limited stainless steel stuff, no cord even though they showed some in stock, no glue sticks and only ugly, dirty 8' sections of 1" PVC. This is at Kapolei. Pearl City had cord but only in purple and braddah said "try ask the other guy, that's his department". I went to Lowes Waikele. Everything on my list PLUS, they actually have stock behind the open box in front. I PAU with Home Depot.

About the dirty pvc pipes, if you get a rag with paint thinner, it will clean it off completely. good luck getting your kayak set up.

My gripe wasn't really about the dirty PVC. It's more about finding a one stop hardware store that actually has stocked shelves and decent customer service. I found a thread online that recommends using Brillo soap pads to remove the lettering from the PVC, works good.

I've had good and bad experiences at both Home Depot and Lowes. :?

In general, Home Depot is a little cheaper (considering the same item), but Lowes carries things that sometimes you cannot find at Home Depot.

I've also had some good customer service and some bad customer service at both stores. It amazes me that in a grand opening situation, they hire so much employees that many of them are just standing around....but after the store has been there for awhile, trying to find a single sole to help you is an act of congress! there is absolutely no one in the isles...I got so frustrated that the little evil side in me starts to think...hmmm.. :? I wonder if I put this small thing in my pocket...would anyone see? Hell, nobody is looking at me when I need the help!

Dont let the little evil guy on your shoulder tell you what to do kt. Haha. I never had too many problems at home depot besides the fact some guys there try to tell me how to build something they have no idea about. But on the other end Lowes is out of control, everytime they deliver windows or doors they are packed laying down, which causes all the glass to break. Or 10 doors standing up with one 2x4 kicker and serrand wrapped, so when you cut it everything falls. Deez guys are crazy.
Aiiiiii Sooooooossss!!!!!

For hardware - nuts and bolts - surprisingly, City Mill stocks better than Home Depot.
Home Depot will always be the cheapest...if it's in stock.
Even for non-SAE sizing - i.e. metric - City Mill has better stock.
This is the case for the "town" stores - Kaimuki / Iwilei City Mils versus Iwilei Home Depot (versus Iwilei Lowes).

Yep the CityMill on Waialae used to carry everything in stock when I lived there. All my stainless bolts came from them when I was rigging my kayak. Ace also has a good supply of stainless fasteners, PVC, paracord etc, should have everything you need to rig up your yak, at least the one in Hilo does.
HOW much is that to ship to Hawaii!!!???

Home Depot is clown Central. Everybody just like mind their business and collect a paycheck. I mess with them, ask dumb questions to see if they know what their talking about. %75 of the time they are way off. Best to go there knowing about what your looking for and DON''T ask questions. Funny one time i had a flooring specialist (right out of high school) tell me i was doing something wrong.

If you really need something & don't have time to mess around. Best to just go HNB.
