Comments: I'm a Navy transplant to Hawaii for the last 10 years & love the fishing.
I'm currently on deployment to Diego Garcia (small Island in the Indian
Ocean) so my catch doesn't count as a Hawaii catch, but nonetheless an Ulua.

I caught "him" on bonefish w/ my 11' surf rod & Daiwa Sealine reel (50lb
test).

Love the site!  Keep it up!  Laters.

Story submitted by Dee Dee

All that I caught from him regarding the specifications of the catch was that he was using an extended 4.0 (with some kind of gearing? Can’t remember what the term he used) on an Outcast pole, with a #32 hook, and #15 leader.  The basic story of this catch was that the bell sounded at 3:10am while he was sleeping.  He quickly got up and grabbed the pole, but had to put it back in the spike since the tugging was so strong.  He continued to lock down the reel and started to apply pressure to turn the fish around.  The last draw came when there was only one layer of line left in the spool.  He held the spool with his thumb which quickly got burnt, but he accomplished in stopping that fish.  As he was bringing the guy in he came across the splice in the line and had to do some fancy maneuvering to get that knot down the rod.  Finally, he got it to shore, but had to climb down a few rocks and avoid the waves crashing on it.  He called for his wife Luana, to bring the gaff and hold the pole while he went to get this big fish, which he finally saw that it was a big ulua.  He gaffed it in the mouth and hoisted the fish onto the rocks and onto shore at approximately 3:50am.  He was ecstatic, but now had to unload his 162 qt cooler in order to place that fish on ice.  He wanted a good reading when they finally got to weigh the fish.  They broke down camp at first light and went to find a large enough scale enough to handle this big guy.  He also needed to keep the whole fish on ice for his weigh-in at Buster’s as his qualifying entry into the year-round competition.

Elden has been fishing all his life with a dream of catching a 100-plus one day.  This was the closest he ever came.  He fishes practically every weekend at his favorite spot.  Everyone was surprised to see such a huge fish come up in the shallow waters where he fishes.

Here's an ulua we (myself & fellow TEAM PHENOM member Kekoa kaluhiokalani) caught on a week night of fishing at waianae on 6-17-2004. We used a good size live moana for bait, a penn 4/0 and a 13ft kimura on 50lb. main line.
We took the strike at 1am. and landed the fish a little after. We didnt get to weigh the fish...but, you know how that goes!        mahalo Monty Garcia TEAM PHENOM FISHING

The "big" one, well big enough. on july 16, 04 myself and Kekoa kaluhiokalani was camping out at waianae (maili) to get ready for my sons birthday party to be held on the next day so we decided to put out two poles while watching the "spot" for my sons party. we baited both poles with live kupipi (if u ask me, das mamoz!) anyway at 11:30pm we took a good strike, fought the fish for a while then jus before landing it, the ulua got struck by a shark right in shore!...WOW bummaz! we were all "sick" but excited at the fact of hookin the ulua, and knowin we still had that one pole. At 3:30am in the morning the one pole took a massive strike rippin line like crazy, jus when i got to it the reel was almost "spooled" i tried to stop it but it went all the way to the knot! now not being able to get back line, kekoa hand lined some back into the reel and the fight was on and we both took turns fighting the ulua and landed it little after on shore, weight was 80lb.s.

Comments: Aloha,
heres my first ulua caught fishing. my fiancee and I went back home to Kona for a little vacation/ camping trip with my ohana down Pawai for the weekend. This would be my first time ulua fishing. I grew up ulua fishing with my dad and uncles and helped with landing their uluas but, i have never Ulua fished by myself. The first strike came at 1 a.m. what a screamer!! took my jigmaster for a ride. it came off within a few minutes. when i brought it in guess what, slip knot!
my cousin started laughing at me.
The second strike came at 2 a.m. to make a long story short i did some boosting to keep the ulua from running into the ono lane, around a pinnacle and into a cave, climbed down a 15 foot cliff and landed the ulua without a gaff (my gaff man couldn't find it). I used my pops old penn 6/0 that he gave me filled with 80lbs Maxima and my uncles custom made one piece 13 ft old school ulua pole 14/0 circle tuna. Mahalos to my ohana for everything and my cousin Ana da gaff man!!

Here's a picture of a 22lb Kagami I caught this past Saturday 12/3/05, at a east side spot. Really good conditions, with the Kona winds,so I decided to take the Kayak out. Used frozen Oama that I kept from this past summer. What a battle, took 30 minutes on my big Penn spinner.
Aloha, Winston

Hi! here are some pics of an Ulua that I caught with the help from my friends here on Guam. It was caught at about 10 p.m. on a light rainy night using live mackerel. The mackerel(Akule) season just started here and I guess the vibration of the school of fish drew it in. It was about a 15-20 min. fight. We didn't get to weigh the ulua but we can all estimate because I am 5'6" tall. Anyways, later until next time. Just select which ones you want to use if not all. Thanks

This is a 25 pound white ulua.  I used a half tako.  It hit about 12:30am of 10/8/2006.  It took me about 5 min to land.  I was using a 13ft nitro pole med heavy with a extended 4/0.  I just wanted to say that to me Ulua fishing is a very spiritual thing and I love doing it and I'm never going to stop as long as I live.
